2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Tallahassee to Titusville, FL

Today was a day of contradictions, it was both easy and challenging, predictable and uncertain, hot and...well it was very hot. The previous night I had arrived at a friend's house at 1am, then we proceeded to talk until 3am. I gave myself an extra hour of sleep and woke at 7:30 then headed out by 8:30 (which was later than I wanted). I have traveled this path before on a road trip last year, so I had been to each charging stop before, but that didn't stop today from presenting unique challenges. First I stopped at A Stone's Throw RV Park and charged up there for 20 minutes. A guy asked about my electric motorcycle then immediately went into a diatribe about how there is no white privileg

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Austin, TX to Tallahassee, FL

In Austin I visited swing dancing friends Orion and Tina who moved to Spicewood, TX together shortly after getting married to open the TerraPurezza Regenerative Agriculture Institute. They are basically taking back the desert by turning dead dirt into soil that can sustain living plants. This is incredible! I definitely at the freshest food of the trip while visiting. Also, they both work at a local high-end restaurant called Apis Apiary and Restaurant that makes incredible food with locally sourced ingredients. Both Orion & Tina taught me volumes about nature, farming, nutrition, and life. We also took a few moments to relax at Krause Springs where I jumped off the 15 foot cliff and we

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - LA to Austin, TX

Surprise! Your bike didn't charge last night. This is what I woke up to on my first day riding East. Fortunately I hadn't used too much of my battery the day before. At 64% I could get out of the main traffic zone of Los Angeles. So off I went, trying to get as far from LA as possible as early as possible on what will be a roasting hot day. After checking Plugshare I decided to stop at Cal Poly Pomona because college charging stations usually are reliable to charge at during the summer. Not today, though. Today I pulled up to the charging station at the John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies and within 15 minutes both a ticketing agent and a professor came to check on me at my bike.

2016 ElMoto Road Trip - Hollywood Electrics

Visited my friends at Hollywood electrics, test rode a OneWheel, and test rode a Zero FXS so I could compare it to an Alta Motors Redshift SM. Check it out! 0:00 - Riding to Hollywood Electrics 1:00 - Trying out the OneWheel. 4:15 - Test ride Zero FXS, with commentary comparing it to the Alta Redshift a few days earlier. 7:35 - Ride around Mulholland Drive & the canyons on my own. 8:50 - Hollywood Electrics Group Ride!

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - San Francisco to LA

Today I had a riding partner! Terry Hershner joined me on the ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. He is the only other person who has gone cross country on an electric motorcycle so far (John Flores did it 1 month after this post), and we met in 2013 on my first cross country trip going from LA to San Francisco. To start the day I traveled alone from San Francisco (really Palo Alto where I was staying) and met up with Terry in Santa Cruz, near Zero HQ and where he lives. Then we rode to our first charging stop where the challenges began. 8:00am - Meet at Staff of Life grocery store, Ben charges up at single Chargepoint station. 9:20am - City of Marina Public Works. 2 Chargepoint Stat

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Sacramento to San Fran

Today was a day of test riding the latest in electric motorcycles! Riding from Sacramento, CA to San Francisco, CA was easy with one stop in Vacaville, CA. Vacaville has had multiple charging stations since I first visited in 2013 after riding my 2012 Zero S across the country. (See Kick Gas the movie at https://vimeo.com/169002549) I arrived in San Francisco only to learn that my first of two test rides for the day was in a different location! Yikes! Fortunately Alta Motors was flexible and I was able to ride. The first test ride was on the Alta Redshift SM (SuperMoto). I met Jon and Evan at the Alta Motors factory and went on a whirlwind of a test ride. The Redshift is a lightweight

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Energica Eva Test Ride

Had an exciting test ride on the Energica Eva in the mountains near San Francisco. It turned into an epic 6-hour ride with multiple stops for fast charging. There's more to the story at the end of my daily video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbpOvwjI9No .

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Ashland to Sacramento

Waking up without a full battery presents a challenge at the start of an otherwise lovely day. Today is one such day. Since I arrived at the hotel late at night and left early in the morning, I had 80% charge, not enough to get to my first destination. Fortunately, Ashland is a college town and thanks to Southern Oregon University, I had several charging stations ready to fill me up pronto! It only took about 15 minutes and I was on my way by 7:30am. It was cold in the morning, and riding in 55 degree weather was a bit chilly indeed. Riding through the mountains of southern Oregon was beautiful, even on I-5. Northern California, north of Sacramento, was also beautiful. It was fascinati

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Seattle to Ashland

Today was a 490 mile day! Started off in Seattle and headed as far south as possible, and I ended up going past my original destination in Eugene, OR. Started the day off by saying goodbye to my cousin and her 3 daughters, and I was overcome with emotion as I rode away from their house. My first charging stop was Olympia, WA and the town has put in quite a few Chargepoint charging stations at a variety of locations. However, they are all 6.6kW SHARED charging stations. What this means is that I was limited to charging at 6.6kW instead of 9-11 kW like I usually charge. Other Chargepoint stations will charge at 6.6kW (each plug supplies the full power). Unfortunately it took me some time,

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Butte, MT to Seattle

It's cold today. It's mid-July in Montana and that means it is 45 degrees at 7am. I am totally unprepared for this! Thinking primarily about the hot southern states I would be traveling to, my packing list included 5 short sleeve shirts, and one long sleeved shirt. Today I put on the long sleeved shirt over a t-shirt, zipped up my leather jacket and shivered my way to the first charging stop at an RV Park. As the wind cut through my summer gloves I considered whether it would have been better to have hands that are too warm in the heat, or not warm enough in the cold. In any event, the first leg of my trip today was only 55 miles, so I could warm up after about an hour of riding. Spent mo

ElMoto 4Corners - Driggs, ID to Butte, MT

YELLOWSTONE DAY!!! Woke up in Driggs, ID and headed straight for Jackson, WY at 7am. Cruised through Jackson and charged at a gas station (ironically) in Grand Teton National Park. The Grand Teton Mountains are truly amazing. It was breathtaking riding by the mountain range, enjoying the view as my perspective changed ever so slightly while riding by. Then I finally made it to Yellowstone National Park. Thankfully I had given myself a "short" travel day of only 330 miles to travel so I had time to actually enjoy the park. I stopped by a waterfall to listen to the serenity of the falling water, and even waited for Old Faithful to erupt! I ended up seeing 3 different geysers erupt that day

ElMoto 4Corners - Park City to Driggs, ID

Today was a "moment of truth" kind of day! Either Monarch Honda (a Zero Motorcycles dealer) had a spare drive belt or they didn't. IF they have one, I will be able to ride up to Driggs today, but IF they don't it will throw off a lot of plans and probably cost a lot of money. *Drum roll* They have one! Thank goodness! First thing in the morning I called AAA to pick me up, the arrived promptly, then took me to Orem, UT (about 30 miles away) to Monarch Honda. There I met Rob and Mike (brothers) and they gave me the good news. Mike started working on my bike immediately at 9am, and I had a chance to chat with Rob (the owner) about Zeros, the trip, racing, etc. They are a top-notch motorcy

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Park City Problem

Park City is a wonderful place! I have been enjoying it for 3 straight days, riding through the mountains, making new friends at the (amazing) Park City Hostel, and generally enjoying myself. Except, I've been here 2 days longer than intended. The problem is that my drive belt broke on my motorcycle while riding around the mountains. A rock got stuck between the gear and the belt while I accelerated up Wasach Mountain and *snap* went my belt! Check out the video to see how it ended up...

2016 ElMoto 4Corners - Denver to Park City

After a wonderful visit in Denver that included refreshing a long-term friendship, kayaking and swing dancing at Little Man Ice Cream (sorry no video this time), I'm off to Park City, Utah! This is a very long leg of the trip that I had to re-plan as a result of understanding the range of my 2014 Zero SR. Also I was concerned that the mountains would eat up my range faster than normal. But I was wrong! What?!?! Riding through the mountains actually extended my range because I could coast downhill. The uphill didn't use up as much range as anticipated, so that was a nice surprise! Also had to divert my path off the path of least miles because there was a dearth of charging opportunities i
